Bad people win. They rise, they shine, they take center stage while the good ones sit quietly in the dark, applauding, hoping it’s their turn next. Newsflash: it’s not. I was raised on that lie. Be kind, they said. Be patient. Be selfless. Do the right thing. And life this invisible, magical life will reward you. But life is not a reward system. It doesn’t hand out gold stars. It doesn’t have a checklist for morality. It doesn’t care how many times I bit my tongue, forgave someone who didn’t deserve it, or cried silently just to not hurt anyone else.
